  27. What is NetSupport Page?

NetSupport Page is an application designed to aid network support personnel and end-users in determining the current and past status of their AppleTalk and TCP/IP network. It automatically generates a World Wide Web page (an HTML document) displaying the current status of specified AppleTalk zones and IP addresses at user-specified intervals.

  32. Any web browser can be used to view the web page. If the HTML document is shared by a web server or AppleShare server, any client on the network can view it. Client screens will automatically update every sixty seconds.

  38. When you first open NetSupport Page, you will see a new ‘untitled’ document window:

  45. You need to provide the information you want displayed on your web page: AppleTalk Zones and IP addresses (usually routers and servers) to monitor. To set up this document, expand the window by clicking the arrow left of the word Setup. The arrow will point down and the window will expand.

  78. Note that sample data is entered for you to get you started and familiar with the formats required by each field.

  80. HTML Title: This is the title of your web page. It will displayed in large blue letters at the top of the page.

Log Max Number of Entries: This number (50 by default) is the number of entries which will be displayed on the web page following the table of current status. The log contains an entry for when a zone or device goes down and one when it comes back up. Note that if this number is large ( > 200) you may want to increase the application memory setting in the Finder for NetSupport Page.

  84. Zones to Monitor: This is a return-delimited list of zone names which will be monitored. Each one listed here will be a separate table entry on the web page.

  86. Look for zones & devices every...minutes: this is the interval in minutes at which NetSupport Page will poll the network for the zones and devices specified in this document.

Devices to Monitor: This is a return-delimited list of IP addresses and device names which will be monitored. Each one listed here will be a separate table entry on the web page. Only the device name will appear on the web page. Use a comma to separate the name and IP address on each line. Use no spaces.

  90. Log to File: This is the file name and location where the web page will be stored. Click the browse button to modify the name or location. You will probably want to store this file in the folder served by your web server.

  92. Tab-Delimited Log: This option is for non-web services. The web page needs to have a set limit to the number of entries displayed in its log. This option will create a limitless log file suitable for spreadsheets and databases.

  94. Save your NetSupport Page document (it does not matter where it is stored). Flip the Switch at the top of the window to begin monitoring. That’s it! Open the file or web site using your web browser and watch your network.

  99. You will notice an extra file with your Log to File as specified above with the same name and a ‘2’ appended to it. This file is used to keep the log data for the web page. Do not delete this file.

Multiple NetSupport Page documents may be opened at one time. This gives you the ability to generate multiple web pages of the status of different sets of zones and devices. Note however that timing is an issue. If there are many IP addresses to ping and the interval is set to 1 for each document, it may not be possible to actually monitor each document every minute.

  107. $0. NetSupport Page is freeware.It is not public domain, however. You have the right to use as many copies as you want on as many machines as you can put it on, as long as any re-distribution contains the application and this Read Me file, unmodified. Do not distribute modified versions.
